Our skilled technicians will assist you every step of the way deciding if the look you want will be best achieved through custom Balayage: hand-painted highlights for a sun-kissed, natural-looking finish that grows out seamlessly or Classic highlights: traditional foil highlights for a vibrant, multidimensional look with added brightness. Both Balayage and highlights are designed to require less frequent touch-ups, keeping your hair looking fresh longer.

Balayage versus Highlights

If you are not sure if you would prefer Balayage or Highlights, the experts at Three-13 Salon in Marietta will guide you on the best results for your hair. For example Balayage is very customizable and has a natural grow out phase. It takes a bit more time, as it is a true artistic process of hand-painting the hair. Highlights provide a bright lightened look from root to tip, achieved through a foiling process. Highlights are often recommended for those with fine or gray hair who need precise coverage, while Balayage suits almost all hair types seeking dimension.

What is Balayage?

The definition of Balayage (pronounced bah-lee-ahge) is a freehand hair-highlighting technique where color is hand-painted onto the hair to create a soft, natural-looking gradation of lightness. Derived from the French word meaning "to sweep," the process involves "sweeping" lightener along the surface of the hair to mimic the way sunlight naturally lightens it over time.

Balayage originated in France in the 1970s and typically features less color at the root and heavier saturation at the mid-lengths and ends, offering a low-maintenance, blended look with minimal, soft-focus regrowth. The technique also requires being touched up about every three to four months versus Highlights that can need refreshing every 6-8 weeks, depending on if your hair technician works with a full or partial foil method. Balayage is suitable for all hair types and lengths.

What are Highlights?

Highlights are strands of hair treated with lightener or color to make them lighter than the base shade, adding dimension, depth, and contrast. Traditional highlights use foils for a more structured, high-contrast look, often requiring more frequent maintenance (every 6-8 weeks) due to noticeable regrowth. Highlights are also highly customizable and can be tailored to complement individual hair types and desired styles. Your Three-13 Salon expert will guide you in deciding if full foils, partial foils or lowlights will benefit your desired look the most. Full foil highlights involve your stylist placing foils all around your entire head. Your hair will be sectioned off and your hair expert will apply a lightener or bleach to create contrasts between your natural hair color and the highlighted strands. This method ensures an even distribution of color from your roots to your tips. While a partial highlight treatment focuses on specific sections of your hair. If your Three-13 Salon stylist chooses this method, they will not cover your entire head in foils, which will allow portions of your natural hair color to shine through. Another coloring option is Lowlights. Unlike highlights, lowlights use darker shades to enhance depth and dimension within your hair. Lowlights can be particularly useful for adding richness to brown hair or darkening over-processed blonde tresses.
